I did mention that our Riga trip was initially planned to take in some Christmas markets & it certainly had a few of those
All streets lead to pretty squares ...
Lots of local Amber in 3 colours -orange, green or yellow ...
Award winning (according to the stall holder) wines that I was encouraged to taste ...
Witch puppets from the forests ...
Angels in all shapes & forms ...
Welcoming streets lit by lights ...
Many of the markets had delicious food & hot drinks
Hot mulled wine or gluwein
A bustling market with carol singers ...
Pork pies ...
Cakes & biscuits in nearby shops
What impressed us most was how much homemade things were on the markets - there is still a strong tradition of hand knitted items - gloves, scarves, socks etc as well as a lot of wooden items like spoons, boards etc. We did not see as much commercialisation of Christmas as we have it, it seemed to be more organic & original. I would have loved to peek inside some of the homes we passed to see how they decorate & set up their tree ...
I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse in to Latvian life with me, thank you for stopping by & taking the time to read & comment.
