Central Market (Centrāltirgus) Riga

I hope you enjoyed the introduction to our visit in Riga, some more of our experiences there.

We were impressed with the variety of food on offer in the Centrāltirgus - the Central market in Riga which is house in 5 huge Zeppelin hangers;  we also saw so many people shopping to cook from scratch & buying fresh fish for Fridays meal.

This is the history of the market:

Central Market (Centrāltirgus) Riga

Central Market (Centrāltirgus) Centrāltirgus iela, www.centraltirgus.lv. When construction was completed in 1930, Riga’s Central Market was one of the largest and most modern marketplaces on the European continent. Seventy years later, four of the five pavilions, which were used as zeppelin hangars during WWI, still serve their original function as meat, fish, produce and dairy markets. The bustling atmosphere also hasn’t changed much, although most of the hawkers are more reluctant to haggle than in the past. The markets spill out beyond the confines of the hangars and operate throughout the day, some longer than others.

While walking through the market, I watched an elderly gent choosing ginger - he expertly checked several ginger roots before selecting a good one, then worked his way through the array of fresh herbs on offer too - not an uncommon sight, indication of people who understand how to use them.

The Russian influence in vodkas is evident ...

How lovely is this?

A whole hanger of stunning fresh fruit, vegetables, meat & fish ...

Meat of all descriptions on offer

Huge pomegranates on sale ...

Some of the stalls outside the hangers ...

Latvians are often seen buying flowers & plants for their homes, this is part of the flower market outside the Zeppelin hangers ... We had come to Riga for the Christmas markets & in the Central market, we found familiar Christmas things ...

Beautiful roses ....

The wreathes were simply lovely, decorated with things from the many forests around Riga

Earthy, simple & stunning ...

I really loved the pine smell that came off these & the lovely designs ...

My colours, my choice would be this ...

The market also had several stalls of stunning Amber - this is what the Soviet & the Baltics are known for ...

I hope you have enjoyed visiting the Central market with me - it is earthy, honest, organic, a community minded space where people come together to shop without the multi national supermarkets - this is a hark back to the past, something that we aspire to ...

Thank you for visiting & taking the time to read & comment, your company is always appreciated!
