Time for some pancake flipping ...

Hi everyone,

The UK really embraces Shrove Tuesday or pancake day in a big way! This year it falls on Tuesday 9th February & it is always time for communities, schools & families to bond over a pan ...

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday & the start of the 40 days of Lent when you are supposed to give up something until Easter.

I lOVE pancakes & we often make some small ones as a quick treat with whatever fruit we have to hand at home.

For small scotch pancakes I use my Mom's recipe

1 cup plain flour
1 egg
5/8th cup of milk (or more to make a thinnish batter)

For small pancakes, I cook 3 at a time in the pan, turning them when bubbles have formed on the top.

For thinner, large pancakes, I make the mixture a bit more runny with extra milk then use a soup ladle to spoon some in to a hot frying pan & swirling it around. I flip it over when it is done on the first side

Some favourite fillings include any fruit we have at home & Greek yoghurt. We always have lots of cinnamon sugar & a little maple syrup drizzled over it ....

Small or large ones?

Pancakes are good with any fruit you have to hand ...

A quick treat ...

How will you be having yours? Do you flip or slide them over? There are some lovely ideas here if you need it ...

After chats with my students this week, I was surprised to know that some bought in ready made pancakes!!!

What - I cried in surprise - WHY? Half the fun is gathering around the stove to make & flip the pancakes then carry them to the table to stack it  up with your choice of filling ...

I hope that is what you will do this Shrove Tuesday.  Do tell what your traditions are & which fillings you favour ...

Thanks for stopping by & for taking the time to comment,

Happy flipping …..

Shrove Tuesday is upon us once again - how soon it comes around, marking the start of LENT.  I love pancakes & we always do Shrove Tuesday at home.

I had the fabulous Hatters to stay so we did pancakes for breakfast ….

We opted for the little chunky Scotch pancake style pancakes with blueberries -
The recipe I use is
1 cup of flour
1 cup of milk (less if you want them thicker)
1 egg

Mix it all together - thin it with extra milk for large thin ones.

Cook 2-3 small ones in a frying pan or 1 large one, flip - yes, F L I P & then enjoy with whatever you like.

Blueberry pancakes with banana, yoghurt & maple syrup. Mine had a generous shake of cinnamon sugar (I add 2/3 sugar to 1/3 cinnamon in a spice bottle & spinkle it over my pancakes …. )

It was sooo good with a mug of steaming hot coffee - this is how breakfast should be.

Tomorrow it is the start of Lent - are you giving anything up for the 40 days leading up to Easter?

Thanks for stopping by, always pleased to read your comments,

Shrove Tuesday - time to get flipping again ....

How soon it seems to come around - Shrove Tuesday is upon us again & it is time to do some fabulous pancakes with inventive fillings! No snow on the ground like last year.

I had all the family & some visitors home on the weekend so decided to do our pancakes on Sunday so we could all partake.

The table was set with a decidedly Spring feel of purple & green

Even our bulbs are purple this year which looks fresh & cheerful & a bowl of mixed tulips are a perfect match!

Perfect start to the day - unrushed breakfast with the family

Shrove Tuesday naturally brings with it the arrival of the 40 days of Lent  which lasts from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.

Lent heralds in the 40 days spent in the desert & a time to give up something. I have given up chocolate the last 3 Lent's which was hard; I have till Ash Wednesday (tomorrow) to decide on what I am giving up.

In the meantime, enjoy the pancakes with many toppings & happy flipping ...
